White House breaks silence on new Trump threat to | Political News
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday explained that President Trump’s threat to “blow up” Oman, a U.S. ally, was rooted in securing “freedom of navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz.
When pressed by a reporter on the president’s threat against the Middle Eastern nation, Bessent answered, “I think the president wanted to punctuate freedom of navigation in the Strait.” He added that he acquired assurance from Iranian ambassadors that no tolls could be carried out on the important oil passageway.
The threat adopted rumors of discussions between Iran and Oman relating to collectively imposing a toll for ships. “The strait is going to be open to everybody,” Trump declared on Tuesday. “Nobody’s going to control it. We’re going to watch over it. We’ll watch over it. But nobody’s going to control it. That’s part of the negotiation that we have.”
According to a regional official cited by the Associated Press in latest days, Tehran seeks to persuade Oman to approve a system to accumulate tolls from ships passing through the strait.
During a cupboard assembly Wednesday, Bessent signaled that he is targeted on re-stabilizing the economic system in the wake of Tehran’s efficient blockade of the strait.

The 5.3 million-person Gulf nation has served as a mediator in the battle and has been attacked by Tehran.
