Democratic lawmakers were outraged by the initial move, and some have already come forward warning that the reduction in cuts will still wreak havoc on the veteran community.
Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee ranking member Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) initially said the move was “a gut punch” while describing the policy as “malevolent and cruel” to veterans.
He added Monday that despite cuts that the VA “is bleeding employees across the board at an unsustainable rate because of the toxic work environment created by this Administration and DOGE’s slash and trash policies.” He also pushed back against the VA’s rhetoric that workers fleeing is a result of “‘natural attrition.'”
Meanwhile, House Veterans’ Affairs Committee ranking member Mark Takano (D-Calif.) also alerted to potential blowback back in March.
