“You make a film three times, in the script, then you make it again when you film, then you edit.
“When we wrote the script, the last line we loved, we were so proud of it. This is how it should end. And the original ending was a callback joke.”
Earlier in the ultimate scene of the movie, they talk about whether or not being sincere about their emotions earlier would have prevented Laura from taking the check.

Revealing the script initially took this thought a step additional, Goldstein went on: “It ended with [Simon] asking, ‘If I told you not to go in to take the test because I love you, would it have stopped you?’ And she goes ‘Nahhh’. That was in the script! And we loved it.”
However, the filmmakers realised that embracing the emotion of Simon and Laura’s ultimate farewell made for a a lot more efficient conclusion.
“And then, as we started filming the film, and the whole thing felt so much more emotional than we had imagined, and as we were getting nearer and nearer to shooting the ending, we were like ‘It doesn’t feel right’,” Goldstein continued.
“I think the whole point is they never say what they mean, they’re always making jokes, so at the end for anything to have changed he has to say the truth and not make a joke.
