Several of the Texas National Guard troops sent to Illinois are already heading back to Texas amid mockery online of their physical appearance.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed reports of replacements, vaguely stating,  “Standards are back at the Department of War.”

Hegseth’s remarks appear to refer to the social media frenzy after ABC News posted pictures of troops arriving in Illinois as a part of the Trump administration’s described crackdown on crime.

“For your own safety, DO NOT get between these guys and a deep dish pizza,” one X user jokingly wrote. Others took on more serious critiques, one writing, “I’d like to see the PT test scores for these fierce warriors.

“They look super ready to fight the evil immigrants and fellow Americans in war-ravaged Chicago,” the user concluded. “But seriously, this is stupid and illegal.”

The Texas Military Department confirmed that it removed an “unspecified number” of the 200 troops deployed to Chicago for not being “in compliance” with its validation process.

On Thursday, a federal judge ruled to temporarily block the deployment of troops to Illinois. The ruling reads that no National Guard members may be deployed to the state for the next 14 days. The restraining order, effective in the ruling, will expire on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Though the ruling means units already sent to Illinois cannot operate on the mission they were sent for, it is likely both sides-local elected leaders and the Trump administration-will be back in court before the block expires.
