Piers Morgan has hit out at Donald Trump after he threatened to impose tariffs on the UK. The US President said eight European nations – Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland – shall be hit with a 10% tariff for opposing US control of Greenland. The tariffs shall be “on any and all goods” exported to the US from February 1 and will last until a deal is reached to buy Greenland. He wrote on Truth Social that these tariffs would stay in place “such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland”.
He added that the tariffs shall be elevated to 25% on June 1. Morgan, 60, has mocked Trump’s risk by turning the thought back on him, suggesting Britain ought to “repurchase” American and impose tariffs on the US if he refuses to promote it. He wrote on X: “Britain should repurchase America. After all, it was ours once, and it would enhance our North Atlantic security. If you don’t sell it to us, President Trump, we’re going to impose tariffs on the U.S. and any country who supports you in resisting this very good deal. Fair?”
“Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes,” he said in a assertion.
“We have also made clear that Arctic Security matters for the whole of Nato and allies should all do more together to address the threat from Russia across different parts of the Arctic.
“Applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of Nato allies is totally flawed. We will of course be pursuing this immediately with the US administration.”
Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson said: “We will not let ourselves be blackmailed. I’ll always stand up for my nation, and for our allied neighbours. This is an EU issue that issues many more nations than those now being singled out.
He added: “Sweden is currently having intensive discussions with other EU countries, Norway and the United Kingdom to find a joint response.”
“Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond to them in a united and coordinated manner if they were to be confirmed.”
