Call the Midwife supplied an update for viewers on Monday after Sunday night’s poignant episode.
The standard BBC One drama returned for its fifteenth collection last month, delivering eight recent hour-long instalments for audiences. The current collection addresses quite a few topics and themes, including the Women’s Liberation Movement, untimely start, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis and slavery.
Jenny Agutter, who portrays Sister Julienne, has steered that the upcoming fifteenth collection will undertake a more sombre tone than earlier instalments.
Sunday’s episode left audiences distressed and fearful about Sister Monica Joan, portrayed by Judy Parfitt. Sister Monica Joan has remained a central character since the programme’s debut episode in 2012, with actress Judy celebrating her ninetieth birthday in November.
In the most current episode, Sister Monica Joan had misplaced her urge for food, even declining pudding, which raised alarm at Nonnatus House, significantly when Sister Julienne, portrayed by Jenny Agutter, noticed her swollen ft.

Dr Turner, portrayed by Stephen McGann, visited Sister Monica Joan at home, where he disclosed she had kidney failure, noting that extra exams would supply additional info. Sister Julienne told Dr Turner: “This was always going to come, wasn’t it? In one form or other.”
To which Dr Turner sombrely responded: “And, when it does, it’s going to feel like the Ravens leaving the Tower of London. The end of the known world.”
Audiences have been left heartbroken by the scenes, flocking to Twitter, now X, to categorical their reactions.
