In an attempt to defend the impartialness of a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund set up in a settlement settlement for a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday said anybody is welcome to apply.
That contains Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.
“This is about compensating Americans for the lawfare that we saw under the last administration,” Vance, who is filling in for press secretary Karoline Leavitt, told reporters during a White House press briefing.
“Anybody can apply for (the settlement fund.) Republicans can apply for it. Democrats can apply for it,” the vice president continued. “I mean if Hunter Biden wants to apply for this particular fund, he is welcome to.”

The fund was created in a settlement between the Justice Department and Trump, who sued the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department for leak of his tax returns.
The settlement included more than $1.7 billion to “provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, once the president’s personal lawyer, said on Monday.
Hunter Biden was convicted of three federal felony gun prices in 2024 but was pardoned by his father before he left workplace.

A spokesperson for Trum’s legal workforce said the president “is entering into this settlement squarely for the benefit of the American people, and he will continue his fight to hold those who wrong America and Americans accountable.”
Once created, questions shortly arose over who can be eligible to obtain funds and who would arbitrate over claims.
In a memo, Blanche laid out that the treasury division has 60 days to transfer $1.8 billion into the newly created fund. A comission of 5 members appointed by Blanche will issue financial aid to claimants. One of those members will probably be chosen “in consultation with congressional leadership.” Trump is allowed to take away members.

The Justice Department didn’t absolutely element who can be eligible for the fund, though it said in a press release that there are “no partisan requirements to file a claim.”
Vance was requested to clear up eligibility necessities on Tuesday, though he added only that the commission would contemplate claims “on a case by case basis.” He also refused to rule out ex-Jan. 6 defendents from the fund.

It’s not clear how long Leavitt’s maternity depart will last. She briefly returned from depart on Apri 24, when a gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
