Kevin Warsh turned emotional on Friday after he was sworn in as the Federal Reserve’s next chairman, changing Jerome Powell, who Donald Trump publicly feueded with over rates of interest.
“Justice Kavanaugh and I felt the majesty of the place where we’re now sitting. We counted ourselves blessed and grateful to serve the nation we love,” Warsh said. “Today marks the return of an establishment I do cherish.”
His affirmation means the 56-year-old will serve a four-year time period as chairman and 14 years as a Fed governor. He beforehand served as a Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, the youngest member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors at the time.
After his stint with the Fed, Warsh labored at Stanley Druckenmiller’s Duquesne Family Office and was a lecturer at Stanford University and the Hoover Institution. Warsh was seen as a frontrunner for Fed chair before Trump nominated Powell in 2018, reportedly at the urging of then-Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.
Powell turned a goal of Trump’s in his second time period over the chair’s refusal to decrease rates of interest as shortly as he needed. Trump even accused him of struggling from “Trump derangement syndrome.”
Trump’s feud with Powell finally led to a probe by his Justice Department into the chair allegedly deceptive Congress concerning the bills of a $2.5 billion renovation project of the Fed’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. The DOJ droped its investigation in April.
Trump calls out Powell
Trump called out Powell without naming him as he launched Warsh.
“Unfortunately, in the eyes of many, the Fed lost its way in recent years. It became distracted by concerns far removed from its core mission and mandate, drifting into matters such as climate policy and DEI initiatives,” the president said. “With the Fed straying from its mandate, while the last administration blew out the deficit. Americans suffered the worst inflation that we had in history.”
Trump’s choose of Warsh drew critics who noticed his nomination as an outser of an unbiased chairman of the Fed. In an attempt to deal with that criticism, the president requested Warsh to stay “independent.”
“I want Kevin to be totally indepdendent,” he said. “Don’t look at me. Don’t look at anybody. Just do your own thing.”
