Johnson says Trump will not block housing bill | Political News
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has announced that he will make sure the House bill the president refused to signal turns into law, with or without Trump’s signature.
Johnson told USA Today that while President Donald Trump had initially refused to signal the bill until his SAVE America had been handed, the president had modified his thoughts and said he would permit the bill to take impact or signal it. According to the outlet, the bill had handed with an overwhelming majority in both the House and Senate.
In an exclusive interview on Capitol Hill, Johnson told the outlet that he started urgent the president during a two-hour Oval Office assembly on Monday. “He said he’ll think about it, and we’ll talk about it again this week,” Johnson said.
Either means, Johnson added, the bill will grow to be law. “He won’t veto the bill. We already know that,” said Johnson.
“He’ll either allow it to just go into law, or he’ll put his signature on it and take partial ownership, and I hope he does the latter,” the speaker added. It comes after the president called the measure a “big yawn.”
The president also called the measure “so unimportant” in contrast to his SAVE America Act, a Republican bill that would require voters to show proof of citizenship at the polls. Last week, the president abruptly canceled the housing bill signing ceremony that would have put the measure into impact.
“He has, as you know, 10 days to make that determination. His point that he’s been trying to make is that the SAVE America Act is his top priority, and it is mine, as well,” Johnson said on Monday. “But I said, ‘Mr. President, we can walk and chew gum at the same time.'”
“The housing bill has a lot of great policy, a lot of important things that he and I both promised to the voters,” he added. Johnson told USA Today that the past week has been loopy for House Republicans, he understands the political argument the president is making.
“I said, ‘You should get the biggest black marker you can, do that giant Trump signature across that, because there’s a lot to be proud of there,'” Johnson said. The Speaker of the House said that he also plans to fulfill the president’s calls for by merging the SAVE America Act with a must-pass protection bill.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, the Florida Republican main the House charge to move the SAVE America Act, is not happy with the merger. I’m not making an attempt to be tough, but this is what 80% of Americans need and what we promised the American people,” she posted Monday on X
“‘MIRVing’ the NDAA plus either SAVE America or Voter I.D. would still permit the Senate to strip out either or the only means to make sure the Senate passes this is to make sure it’s in the bill textual content of the NDAA, that means that my modification(s) must be made an order,” she wrote.”I’m not making an attempt to be tough, but this is what 80% of Americans need and what we promised the American people, so I stand by my choice.”
