Trader Joe’s now operates in 42 states and the District of Columbia. The states presently without a location are Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Operating over 600 storefronts, the company makes use of a strategic growth model. A main element of its business strategy is its private-label merchandise and a rotating stock to keep client curiosity.

The model focuses on offering aggressive pricing with high quality merchandise, interesting to cost-conscious consumers who also need reliability.

In October 2024, the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast hosts shared that the chain seems to be at population density and site visitors when deciding on places for new stores.

The lack of TJ’s places in the lacking states is due to the low population density and the geographic barrier posed to the grocery store’s provide chain. Hawaii and Alaska, for instance, are distant from the bulk of Trader Joe’s merchandise that are made and distributed.

Trader Joe’s CEO told the Anchorage Daily News, “Opening stores outside the 48 states requires us to solve unique logistical and operational problems and we would only open stores where we are able to bring real value to our customers.”
