Florida State commit Charlie Woods fell short of qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship.

The 17-year-old participated in Thursday’s U.S. Amateur qualifying at the Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course and was unable to advance after posting a five-over 76 in the latest setback to his younger career.

The son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods missed qualifying by six strokes. His father had captured the U.S. Amateur Championship three consecutive occasions before turning into an 82-time PGA Tour champion.

Despite the setback, Woods attracted appreciable consideration during his spherical, carrying his own bag while competing against 80 other younger golfers.

Woods is now reportedly turning his focus to the U.S. Junior Amateur, scheduled for later this month at Saucon Valley.

Woods, a junior at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida, rocketed to twenty first in the Rolex American Junior Golf Association rankings after claiming victory at the Team TaylorMade Invitational with a 54-hole complete of 15-under 201 last May. He subsequently completed ninth at the Boys Junior PGA Championship in July and 18th at the Rolex Tournament of Champions.

By committing to Florida State, Woods selected a different path from his father. The 15-time major champion attended Stanford.

“It’s been very different, the recruiting process,” Tiger Woods said at the Hero World Challenge.

“Now, you have cellphones. We didn’t have cellphones. We would have written letters that would show up in the mailbox. It’s just very different how fast coaches can communicate with the family members and the player that they’re trying to recruit.

“It’s just a different world. Not saying it is good or unhealthy, it is just different.”
