Dem Fold Pre-Election, Government Now Stays Open

The federal price range can appear to have been kicked down the highway, but at least it received kicked back past the November midterms. A price range struggle and a authorities shutdown would not have helped either facet, but it could have damage Democrats worse; at least, that appears to be their conclusion, because, frankly, the Dems blinked.

House Democrats relented to Republicans in their quest to stop a authorities shutdown after spending months raising the chance forward of the essential midterm elections.

Tuesday’s profitable vote in the House, the second such attempt since July, means that lawmakers have formally punted funding the federal government until after the November election and are sending the short-term funding patch, recognized as a persevering with decision (CR), to President Donald Trump’s desk.

It also marks the end of months of issues that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., would again shut the federal government down for political gain as they vie for control of Congress.

Note the way in which that last sentence is worded. If the federal government had entered a partial shutdown before the midterms, it will doubtless have given Republicans a big, stunning stick to beat Democrats with, since it will patently have been Democrat obstruction forcing the showdown. The House and Senate Minority Leaders (let’s hope they maintain those titles after November) evidently thought so; they made a calculation, and the conclusion they arrived at was to give in. As the previous saying goes, the key to taking part in chicken is realizing when to flinch. Now, thoughts you, the big price range struggle is yet to come; this is a persevering with decision (CR), which suggests that the real struggle is neither gained nor misplaced, just postponed.

But it is postponed until after the election, which might be a reduction for both sides. 

Not all House and Senate Republicans had been blissful with the CR.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., and members of Johnson’s proper flank have criticized the CR over the hemp ban delay and grant rule change, a sentiment shared by Republicans in the Senate.

“The Senate did violence to our bill,” Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, told Fox News Digital. “Hemp and the grants are the two big ones…and frankly, I just don’t think CRs ought to be on suspension…when you put it on suspension, you’re not asking for my vote, okay, you’re going to get Democrats.”

That’s all effectively and good; ideas are important. But first you will have to win, and that appears to be the calculation that the Republican congressional management has made, as effectively. Holding the House and Senate is essential in this, in all probability the most consequential midterm election of the century so far. If the GOP loses the House and/or the Senate, then take a look at all the issues labored on, and all the issues improved since January of 2025, like unlawful immigration, rebuilding our army, the recovery of billions, perhaps trillions in fraud – and kiss it all goodbye.

Keeping sane palms on the tiller of the ship of state is a matter of precept too, after all.

I’m glad that congressional Republicans not only prioritized eradicating the risk of another harmful authorities shutdown, but we did our job weeks before the deadline and with bipartisan assist. While funding the federal government is one of our most basic obligations, my hope is that this effort proves that authorities shutdowns serve no one, and we must always rapidly full our work on the fiscal 12 months 2027 appropriations course of.
