Americans Don’t Want the Data Centers – RedState

America is in a race against China for AI dominance, and proper now, the greatest impediment may not be Beijing. It is perhaps local zoning boards.

The disruptions these amenities trigger are real. So is the price of dropping. 

The opposition’s issues are also real, even if the politics behind them are predictable. Half of opponents cited extreme useful resource usage, with water and power each talked about by 18 %. Others raised pollution, visitors, property values, and greater utility payments. Some particularly objected to taxpayer money being spent on construction.

Maine turned the first state to move a invoice outright barring large-scale data middle construction. Wisconsin adopted with a local referendum giving voters more say over tax-funded development tied to a proposed campus. These are usually not natural revolts from the political middle. They are populist-driven efforts to use local authorities as a veto on national priorities. 

On the power facet, projections show that data facilities will eat more than 100 gigawatts of electrical energy by 2035, up from 34.7 gigawatts in 2024. Electricity costs are already up 6.1 % over the past 12 months, almost double the general inflation fee.
