Wild Visa fraud Had People Paying to Be Robbed — | Political News
Here’s an immigration fraud story with a distinctive twist: people have been apparently paying a Chicago man hundreds of {dollars} to stage armed robberies so they may declare to be a “victim” and apply for a sure variety of visa.
Federal prosecutors say that’s precisely what was occurring in a loopy scheme that concerned a whole bunch of faked robberies across the nation. And the rip-off continued until one of those phony holdups turned horrifyingly real and an harmless store clerk ended up being shot.
Parth Nayi, 29, of Woodridge, Illinois, was sentenced Thursday to two years in federal prison and fined $50,000 after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit visa fraud. Prosecutors say Nayi was the chief organizer of the scheme that staged armed robberies at espresso outlets, eating places, liquor shops, and fuel stations from 2022 through 2024.
According to the Department of Justice, hundreds of people paid Nayi anyplace from $5,000 to $30,000 each to pose as victims of the rip-off “crimes” so that they may later apply for U visas, that are set apart for overseas nationals who are victims of sure varieties of crimes and who later help law enforcement.
🚨#SENTENCING Parth Nayi, a suburban Chicago man, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for conspiring to stage armed robberies so that the purported victims may apply for U.S. immigration visas reserved for crime victims. The scheme was fairly simple: Nayi would recruit people to pose as theft victims, prepare the areas of the “robberies” and rent the “robbers.” Then, he’d direct the “victims” to report the crimes and use their cooperation with police to assist their U-visa functions. Many of the store house owners have been in on the fraud.
The rip-off ran easily until one of those staged robberies went fully off the rails.
On July 13, 2023, three masked males entered Bucktown Food & Liquor in Chicago and demanded clients and workers flip over their wallets. During the faux holdup, one of the robbers unintentionally fired his gun, placing a 26-year-old clerk in the stomach and critically injuring him, according to CWB Chicago.
In other phrases, Nayi, in making an attempt to set up a faux crime, truly facilitated a real one.
Prosecutors called Nayi “the main organizer and at the center of almost every single one” of the a whole bunch of staged robberies. Five others have also been convicted in the federal investigation.
