Antiques Roadshow expert gives guest touching gift | TV Shows
On Antiques Roadshow, a guest was overjoyed when she presented an “spectacular” needlework art piece inherited from her grandmother, which had been in the family for generations.
The intricate embroidery, which was created by Maria Koogle, depicted women in flowing dresses against a nature backdrop and was appraised at $40,000 to $50,000 back in 2009.
Suzanne, the owner, initially had no plans to sell the cherished heirloom, but faced with health issues years later, she reconsidered. Contacting appraiser Allan Katz led to an unexpected solution that eased her anxiety about selling the piece.
Katz recounted: “She was having anxiety about parting with this piece and felt guilty about selling it outside the family.”
In a heartwarming twist, Katz shared how he alleviated her concerns: “I blew up the needlework with high def photography to the exact size of the original.”
Allan’s generosity allowed her to keep a perfect keepsake of her lost treasure.
She must be relieved that she didn’t sell the silk thread-woven art piece to an antiques dealer who had visited her home after her mother’s passing.
Seemingly trying to capitalize on her unawareness of its worth, the dealer initially offered Suzanne a paltry $3,000 for it, only to return later with a doubled offer.
But Suzanne stood her ground – and now, with $100,000 in her bank account and a replica almost indistinguishable from the original, she must be pleased she rejected the earlier lowball offer.
