Antiques Roadshow guest refuses to sell after | TV Shows

Usualy, Antiques Roadshow friends are those left “floored,” but knowledgeable Hilary Kay was left surprised by one guest’s story behind Titanic letters despatched by his father, Sidney Daniels, who survived the devastating catastrophe.

At just 18 years previous, Sidney labored aboard the vessel as a plate washer when it departed in April 1912 on its inaugural journey from Southampton to New York City. During a latest episode of the show, which was a rerun, Sidney’s son and daughter introduced along a letter he had written and revealed their father’s outstanding survival story.

And while some friends have humorous tales about their objects, like one who introduced in an “ugly” clock that was “banished” to the attic, this one was more emotional.

Sidney’s daughter told Hilar, “It was a Sunday. He was sound asleep. There was a banging and shouting, and it was the night watchman. They were all a bit bleary-eyed because, at first, they thought it was a drill.

“It wasn’t until he bought up on deck that there have been hardly any people around at first, and then officers got here and turned to him and said, ‘Go to these cabins’.”

She described how Sidney had been assigned to rouse sleeping passengers on the vessel following the collision but it proved challenging, reports the Express.

“Of course it was onerous to wake people, they had been asleep. Some reacted in different methods. One or two said ‘What does this younger man know? He’s 18, the boat is unsinkable, we’re not going up on deck’,” she continued.

“Others had been saying, ‘We’ve bought kids, they are going to get a chill if they go up on deck’. So he helped the youngsters with the lifejackets and ushered them up on deck.”

Hilary chimed in, “You can think about the scene of chaos and despair because people realised there weren’t enough lifeboats.”

“That was his job, to strive and get people into the lifeboats and the water was rising all of the time. When all the lifeboats had gone, the water was up around his knees and he thought, ‘It’s time to go’,” Sidney’s son replied.

“So he dived off the facet of the boat, swam away from it, got here to a lifebelt and to my dad’s thoughts, it was too close to the boat, he was afraid when the boat went down, the suction would take them down so he said to this chap, ‘It’s no good right here, let’s swim away’.

“Apparently, this chap followed him, and they just kept swimming. He said he saw a star in the sky, which he thought was his mother, and swam towards this star and eventually came to this life raft, which was upside down, and managed to cling onto that.

“When he was on there, he said, ‘I’m drained, I need to go to sleep,’ and the chap next to him said, ‘Don’t go to sleep lad, if you do, it will likely be your last’.

“So they sat there singing hymns trying to pass the time away.”

The pair had introduced along a letter which had stayed tucked inside Sidney’s uniform pocket when he jumped from the Titanic.

Hilary appeared amazed by Sidney’s story as she assessed the treasured artifacts, saying, “It’s an extraordinary item and anything related to the Titanic has this extraordinary effect on people.

“It is an extraordinary second to behold one thing which is so linked into an extraordinary second in historical past. We’re speaking about around £10,000, is the practical worth.”

Despite the hefty price tag, Sidney’s son and daughter declined Hilary’s offer, affirming their decision with, “It’s very good but it isn’t going out the household”, and adding, “It’s going to a museum.”

Antiques Roadshow may be considered on BBC One and iPlayer.
