BBC Breakfast hosts three-word comment as Line of Duty | UK News

BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent shared her prediction of the new instalment of Line of Duty after particulars of the upcoming seventh collection have been launched.

The sixth season of author Jed Mercurio’s in style police drama wrapped up in 2021 and followers had been hoping for another instalment from AC-12. It was confirmed in November that it will be back for another run, with visitor lead Robert Carlyle later added to the line-up.

The BBC has now teased a few particulars of Robert’s function, sharing that he’ll play a veteran marksman who “keeps himself to himself”.

The broadcaster also confirmed that the show’s stars Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston had already met for a readthrough of the script.

“Bet it’s brilliant,” presenter Sally said as she mentioned the announcement with her co-host Jon Kay. “It’s always beautifully written,” she added.

Robert is set to play Detective Constable Shaun Massie, a specialist rifle officer and veteran marksman who is working with Tactical Operations Unit 7 (TO-7) to take down Organised Crime Groups.

The BBC revealed: “A gruff loner, Massie keeps himself to himself, but when his boss, TO-7’s commanding officer DI Dominic Gough, is accused of being a inappropriate predator, Massie’s otherwise detached demeanour changes drastically.”

“Further information about the return of Line of Duty will be announced in due course, but we can confirm the cast have gathered for a readthrough,” the announcement went on.

Discussing the upcoming collection, Jon said: “I assumed Robert Carlyle was going to be playing a baddie, but he’s playing… he’s playing a police marksman, a gruff marksman.”

“He could still be a baddie, couldn’t he?” he continued.

“Of course he could still be a baddie!” exclaimed Sally, asking whether or not the presenter had ever watched the show, which is understood for its twists. “That’s the whole thing, we don’t know, do we?”

Line of Duty revolves around the work of an Anti-Corruption Unit 12 (AC-12), with Vicky and Martin as officers Kate Fleming and Steve Arnott and Adrian as Superintendent Ted Hastings.

The next instalment is due to start filming in spring 2026.
