Bob Dylan almost quit music after hearing this band – | Music News
Bob Dylan practically gave up and quit music for good after hearing a sure well-known rock band.
From 1986 to 1987, the now 84-12 months-outdated music icon embarked on his True Confessions and Temples in Flames tour with a youthful, more profitable band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. The group wasn’t precisely new, having fashioned in 1976, but they have been still brisker than Dylan, whose profession had begun to wane in the Nineteen Eighties.
Dylan, who at present is not slowing down even into his mid-80s, immediately seen that they have been full of the rock ‘n’ roll spirit, which had also been waning at the time. As their success soared, the Blowin’ in the Wind people singer felt uncertain about his own materials and profession.
The Temples in Flames tour started in Wellington, New Zealand, and it was 90 exhibits that noticed Dylan down in the dumps.
“I’d been on an eighteen-month tour with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. It would be my last,” he wrote in his 2004 memoir, Chronicles: Volume One. “I had no connection to any kind of inspiration.”
He added, “Whatever had been there to begin with had all vanished and shrunk. Tom was at the top of his game, and I was at the bottom of mine.”
Dylan felt himself diminish as The Heartbreakers continued to blossom as a rock band.
“I couldn’t overcome the odds,” Dylan continued to recall in his memoir. “Everything was smashed. My own songs had become strangers to me.”
Despite being buddies with Petty and his group, he felt that the tour was a failure for his profession, at least. “It wasn’t my moment of history anymore,” he wrote.
He added, “There was a hollowing singing in my heart, and I couldn’t wait to retire and fold the tent. One more big payday with Petty and that would be it for me.”
This was a regarding factor, contemplating what The Who’s guitarist Pete Townshend once recalled (per Far Out), “I asked Bob Dylan why he does so many gigs. He told me, ‘I’m a folk singer. A folk singer is only as good as his memory, and my memory is going.’ He’s doing it to keep his memory alive.”

Still, Dylan added in his ebook, “I was what they called over the hill.… The mirror had swung around and I could see the future – an old actor fumbling in garbage cans outside the theatre of past triumphs.”
Petty could not have realized his group was doing better than their headlining act, but the singer seen that his buddy was struggling.
Petty told Paul Zollo, “It revealed he has insecurities like everyone else has. Because the thing is, when you’re that famous, people don’t often give you that benefit of the doubt, they kind of just assume that you understand how great you’re supposed to be.
“But the reality is, you’re only a human, and you’re still going to grow through the whole lot that people go through.”
Dylan fought through the low point of his career and continued to perform for his fans.
He turned 84 in May, but has shown no signs of wanting to slow down and retire. In addition to releasing numerous records and collaborating with many of his fellow artists, he has continued to tour, going so long that it has earned the nickname “Never Ending Tour.”
In December 2022, Dylan told the Wall Street Journal that he stored touring because “it’s a excellent manner to keep nameless and still be a member of the social order.”
“You’re the grasp of your destiny,” he added. “But it’s not an simple path to take, not enjoyable and video games.”
Dylan acquired a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. In 2001, he gained an Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song for Wonder Boys.
Aside from his music, his 2004 ebook, Chronicles: Volume One, turned an worldwide bestseller and gained the National Book Award.
Dylan’s musical legacy has been honored many instances. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1982, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.
