Donald Trump justified his choice to ship the National Guard to Los Angeles amid the violent riots against his immigration insurance policies, going so far as to say that L.A. “would have been completely obliterated” had he not stepped in.
“We made a great choice in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California,” the president penned on his Truth Social platform early Monday afternoon.
“If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated,” he claimed. “The very incompetent ‘Governor,’ Gavin Newscum, and ‘Mayor,’ Karen Bass, should be saying, ‘THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU, SIR.'”
He accused both politicians of mendacity to the people of California by telling them that the National Guard wasn’t needed.
“Just one look at the pictures and videos of the Violence and Destruction tells you all you have to know,” Trump wrote. “We will always do what is needed to keep our Citizens SAFE, so we can, together, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump’s remark on Truth Social got here amid the escalating feud between him and Newsom, who introduced earlier on Monday that he and the state of California could be suing Trump over the deployment of the Guard.
“This is exactly what Donald Trump wanted. He flamed the fires and illegally acted to federalize the National Guard,” Newsom wrote in a tweet, to which he hooked up a video of his interview with MSNBC on Monday evening.
“The order he signed doesn’t just apply to CA. It will allow him to go into ANY STATE and do the same thing. We’re suing him,” the governor wrote.
Trump’s deployment of the National Guard was the first such order by a president to override the desires of a governor since the Civil Rights Movement in the Sixties.
President Lyndon B. Johnson deployed the Guard in Alabama back in 1965 during a civil rights march that turned violent, invoking the Insurrection Act, an 18th-century wartime law that permits the president to deploy army forces during instances of revolt.
Trump, meanwhile, when he deployed the National Guard in California, invoked a related but totally different federal law that locations the National Guard under federal command under related circumstances.
But that law stipulates that orders for those functions “shall be issued through the governors of the States” — which means it isn’t clear whether or not Trump’s activation of the guard is legal or not without Newsom’s consent. That could also be why Newsom and the state are suing.
During the interview with MSNBC, Newsom known as Trump a “stone-cold liar” and stated he was growing more and more pissed off with the White House’s handling of and response to the riots.
“Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s, you know, lit the proverbial match. He’s putting fuel on this fire, ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard — an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act,” Newsom stated.
