President Donald Trump warned that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s “days are numbered” as the chief of the nation.
In a large-ranging interview with Politico, President Trump refused to rule out an American invasion of Venezuela, as he repeated his dedication to struggle unlawful narcotics trafficking into the U.S.
When questioned if a ground invasion in Venezuela is probably going, Trump said: “I don’t comment on that”, and went on to reiterate his claims that Maduro has “sent us millions of people, many from prisons, many drug dealers, drug lords, uh, mental institution … people in mental institutions” during Biden administration, whom he called “a very stupid president.”
Pressed on his intent to oust Maduro, Trump said “his days are numbered” and that he would not “want to” rule out an American ground invasion.
‘Something comparable to Vietnam’
In an interview with The Guardian, Celso Amorim, the chief overseas coverage adviser to Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, warned that a U.S. invasion of Venezuela may plunge the area into a Vietnam-style battle.
Amorim called Trump’s latest choice to order the closure of Venezuelan airspace “an act of war,” voicing fears that the disaster may intensify over the next few weeks.
“The last thing we want is for South America to become a war zone – and a war zone that would inevitably not just be a war between the U.S. and Venezuela. It would end up having global involvement, and this would be really unfortunate,” said Amorim.
“If there was an invasion, a real invasion … I think undoubtedly you would see something similar to Vietnam – on what scale it’s impossible to say,” added Amorim, who thought even some enemies of Venezuela’s authoritarian chief can be inclined to be a part of the resistance against such a overseas intervention.
“I know South America … our whole continent exists because of resistance against foreign invaders,” said Amorim.
