Fetterman Calls Mamdani a “Clown” Over His

John Fetterman doesn’t do subtlety, and he didn’t hassle attempting it on Fox News this weekend. Asked by Maria Bartiromo about Zohran Mamdani’s menace to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he units foot in New York for the U.N. General Assembly in September, the Pennsylvania Democrat had a one-word review: clown.

“Sit down,” Fetterman told him, sarcastically calling him a “tough guy.”

Fetterman has spent two years building a brand as the last pro-Israel Democrat standing, and he’s clearly done watching a socialist mayor in the country’s biggest city cosplay as an international war crimes tribunal.

The arrest menace isn’t new. Mamdani has been floating it since his marketing campaign. What modified this weekend is how far he was prepared to hedge when somebody finally pressed him on the mechanics of it. In a taped interview with the New York Times, Mamdani said his legal crew is having an “active conversation” about whether or not New York City has any authority to act on the International Criminal Court’s warrant for Netanyahu, who the ICC has accused of struggle crimes tied to the Gaza marketing campaign.

He wouldn’t say whether or not that means deploying the NYPD to really arrest Netanyahu in September. He wouldn’t say whether or not he’d honor the diplomatic immunity that sometimes covers overseas leaders attending the U.N. General Assembly. What he did say is that Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague” and that New York received’t be “writing our own laws” to make an arrest occur; it’ll only act within whatever authority really exists.

The drawback, which Fetterman zeroed in on immediately, is that the authority doesn’t exist. The United States isn’t a signatory to the Rome Statute that created the ICC. Washington doesn’t acknowledge its jurisdiction over American allies, and no local police division, not the NYPD, not any other, has the standing to implement a warrant from a court the federal authorities doesn’t reply to. A mayor threatening to do it anyway isn’t a legal strategy. It’s theater aimed at a base that wished precisely this variety of confrontation when it elected him.

Fetterman wasn’t alone in that read. Legal commentators piled on nearly immediately after the Times interview was posted, with one attorney calling the entire premise “clown level stuff” given that the NYPD has no jurisdiction over the ICC’s warrant to start with. Fox News rounded up a wave of related mockery, describing the mayor as having been “pummeled online” by critics who called the arrest menace pure political theater dressed up as overseas coverage.

This is much from the first time Fetterman has damaged from his celebration to defend Israel, and it received’t be the last. In the same Fox look, he repeated a line he’s used for months: that if the Democratic Party retains drifting away from unconditional help for Israel, he could not keep a Democrat for much longer. He’s pointed to the celebration’s leftward power under figures like Mamdani as evidence that the coalition he joined no longer exists in the shape it used to.

The struggle over Israel coverage inside the Democratic Party isn’t theoretical anymore. It has a face in Mamdani, working the nation’s largest metropolis, and a foil in Fetterman, a sitting senator publicly weighing whether or not he still belongs in the celebration at all. Mamdani’s crew is still understanding what his legal professionals will let him do in September. Fetterman has already told his celebration what it’ll value him if it retains transferring in Mamdani’s direction.
