Ahead of the new sequence of Death in Paradise, show bosses confirmed that Ginny Holder wouldn’t be showing in sequence 15. Ginny performed beloved police officer Darlene Curtis for seven years before saying her departure.
In a current post, the show revealed Ginny’s off-screen exit from the sequence, after Darlene’s absence was also famous in the Death in Paradise Christmas particular, as she only appeared via video hyperlink.
Alongside a montage of clips of Darlene’s time on the show, the post read, ” Sadly, we’re saying goodbye to Darlene this series. Ginny Holder has been a much-loved cast member, and we’re hugely grateful to her for bringing her talent, personality and energy to Officer Darlene Curtis.”
Hinting at a potential return, it concluded, “We wish her all the best – maybe we’ll catch up with her in Saint Marie down the line!”
The actress herself also took to social media to thank her loyal followers. She said, “Thank you so much to the BBC and Red Planet Pictures for giving me the absolute gift of playing Darlene. I loved her deeply, and saying goodbye to her has been far more emotional than I ever expected — I really do miss her.
“Thank you to the unimaginable solid and crew of Death in Paradise — such a gifted, form, and joyful group of people. Working alongside you all has been a privilege and a pleasure, and I’ll cherish those reminiscences endlessly.
“And a very special thank you to James Hall for writing such an amazing character. Darlene truly lifted straight off the page, and I’m so grateful to have been her voice.”
She concluded the post, “And finally, the biggest thank you to the fans. Your love and support for Darlene has meant the world to me. Being nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the TV Times Awards was honestly so humbling, and I’m beyond grateful. Big love to you all, you’ve made this journey unforgettable.”
Fans had been left gutted by Darlene’s exit, with many voicing their ideas on social media. “Can’t believe you won’t be returning. You have truly been awesome, Ginny! No one cheered louder when Selwyn asked Darlene to join the Saint Marie,” one fan said.
Another wrote, “I’m really going to miss you on Death in Paradise. I loved Darlene.”
A 3rd added, “Thank you SO much.. we loved Darlene.. best of luck for your next adventure.”
Someone else went on, “Best wishes, Ginny, on your next adventure. I really loved your portrayal of Darlene.”
While Darlene will probably be missed by followers, show bosses soon announced the character who can be changing her. Sergeant Mattie Fletcher (performed by Catherine Garton) will make her debut on the show tonight and will be a part of Don Gilet, who performs DI Mervin Wilson, and Shantol Jackson, who performs DS Naomi Thomas.
Death in Paradise airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
