How Texas is transforming into a purple state as | Political News
Republicans in Texas might not really feel as secure as they once did due to the unfolding political climate, an knowledgeable says.
Speaking to Daily Express US, MIT Professor Charles Stewart shared his ideas on how the crimson state may observe Georgia’s path in turning into purple. “For the last 20 years, Texas has been gravitating toward being shaded purple,” Stewart argued.
“They are about 10 years behind where Georgia was,” he added. “Every election is like one point closer for the Democrats, which means in a really good Democratic year, Texas either could go Democratic under the right circumstances, or if it didn’t, it’s going to require Republicans to pour tremendous resources into the state just to hold the seat.“
According to Stewart, who was named the Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Political Science in 1985, a key main today is “going to be so consequential for figuring out whether it really could be a close election or whether either the Democrats or whether the Democrats will nominate a candidate who is not going to get them as close as they might otherwise.”
When pressed on whether or not he foresaw Texas ever turning into a state that would possibly sway an election, Stewart said it would. “We may consider it a battleground state in the same way that Georgia is now considered a battleground state for presidential elections,” Said Stewart.
“There’s some life in the Democratic Party in terms of state elections,” he added. “And we’ll see what happens in Georgia this time around, for instance.”
According to Stewart, Georgia turned a battleground state because “they have this one big metropolitan area that has attracted either northern immigrants or kind of the class of residents who are going toward the Democratic Party these days.” He added, “kind of college-educated, kind of information economy voters. And there are a lot of cities in Texas that are kind of like that.”
“They’re just not Atlanta yet,” Stewart continues. “But 10 years from now is Dallas a little bluer? Tarrant County looks to be shading and trending in that direction.”
Stewart factors out that Texas “continues to attract knowledge workers from the North and from the West Coast, [and] that’s the sort of dynamic that could push Texas into a much more competitive environment.” The precise change wouldn’t occur in a single day.
“I think that what it would take would be a few elections where maybe a railroad commissioner might win again, or in a really awful year for Republicans, Democrats could pick up maybe the governorship or the presidency, but people might consider that a fluke,” Stewart opined. “So Texas, kind of moving into kind of more purple areas, it’s not a one-and-done, it’s over a number of elections.”
According to Stewart, the race in Texas is also fascinating because “political leaders on the Democratic side have cleared the field for these two candidates so that Democrats can speak clearly to what they want and what a majority will win.” This runs in distinction to Republicans, who are still sending combined messages.
“I think the problem on the Republican side is that the Republican leadership and the Republican money has not done that,” he said. “And so you have [Wesley] Hunt sitting there as a potential spoiler and that’s reflective, I think ironically enough, the Democratic Party is generally seen as being the more out of control party, but in Texas, it looks like the Republicans are much less strategic in kind of setting up the primary for then sure victory in November.”
