Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Kash Patel said the FBI is investigating the shooting at Old Dominion University as a terrorist assault.
The FBI director made the announcement on Thursday afternoon while the shooting at the Norfolk, Virginia college occurred around 10:43 a.m on Thursday.
“Earlier today, an armed individual opened fire at Old Dominion University, leaving one person dead and two others wounded. The shooter is now deceased, thanks to a group of brave students who stepped in and subdued him – actions that undoubtedly saved lives along with the quick response of law enforcement.”
“The FBI is now investigating the shooting as an act of terrorism. Our Joint violent extremism Task Force is fully engaged, embedded with local authorities, and providing all resources necessary in the investigation. In the meantime, please pray for the victims, their families, and the ODU community,” Patel wrote on X.
Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36, from Sterling Virginia was the recognized shooter, officers said. Patel confirmed Jalloh died in the shooting.
Jalloh was allegedly focusing on an ROTC class, officers said. Jalloh was also a former member of the Army National Guard. The two injured have been also half of the ROTC.
Roughly 30% of Old Dominion’s are affiliated with the military. The college’s web site states there are 24,000 enrolled college students.
Old Dominion University President Brian Hemphill said the college has canceled courses and suspended operations on the college’s main campus on March 12.
“The safety of our campus community is my top priority,” Hemphill wrote. “We are deeply committed to safeguarding all Monarchs and ensuring a secure learning, living, and working environment at all times.”
