Frank McCourt’s proposed gondola from Union Station to Dodger Stadium hit what seems to be its most important roadblock yet on Wednesday, when the Los Angeles City Council voted to urge Metro to kill the project.
The decision, permitted by an 12-1 vote, shouldn’t be in itself any form of formal determination. It wouldn’t take impact unless Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass concurs, and Bass beforehand voted in favor of the project as a member of the Metro board.

Project opponents — and the decision itself — cite among other points that 160 trees from a beloved park could be completely eliminated to make approach for the gondola and that a UCLA research projected Dodger Stadium visitors wouldn’t even be decreased by 1%.
In a letter to councilmembers, the board of administrators of Zero Emissions Transit — the nonprofit charged with funding and working the gondola — urged the council to reject what it called “serious inaccuracies and misleading claims.”
The 160 trees could be briefly eliminated and then restored, with 480 trees added as properly, the letter said. The UCLA research retracted its conclusion, the letter also said, based on “biased data supplied by individuals affiliated with project opposition groups.”
