Martin Kaymer turned back the clock to declare a share of the first-round lead at the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, revealing his stellar efficiency was sparked by an sudden query from a PGA of America affiliate at the Champions Dinner.
The two-time major champion’s sport has misplaced some of its luster in latest years, but the LIV Golf member holds a lifetime exemption to the PGA Championship courtesy of his triumph at Whistling Straits in 2010.
The former world No. 1 made the most of his alternative, carding just one bogey on his means to a three-under-par 67, touchdown him in a seven-way tie for the lead alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
The 41-year-old German has endured a tough start to the LIV season, sitting in the relegation zone after seven occasions. However, his aggressive fire was reignited at Tuesday’s Champions Dinner, when a PGA of America member requested Kaymer whether or not he was still taking part in the sport.

“I’ll tell you a funny story,” Kaymer told reporters. “On Tuesday evening, we had the Champions Dinner, and there was a gentleman sitting next to me from the PGA of America, and he asked me if I still play. And I said, ‘What do you mean?'”
“He said, ‘Well, are you playing this week?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, that’s why I’m here. I’m not flying from Europe to here to have a New York strip with you guys, of course I’m playing.'”
“And that really motivated me. So it was a good start to the week. Again, I really enjoy Aronimink Golf Course, it’s fun to play, and I look forward to hopefully having another three good days.”
Kaymer was delighted with his show, believing Aronimink enhances his explicit set of abilities.
He remarked: “[I played] really well. Didn’t make many mistakes. Stayed out of trouble. Avoided those 5-7-footers for par, which can be quite stressful. It can be quite an intimidating golf course, especially with that cold wind we had today.
“So, the purpose was to hit fairways and greens and attempt to hit a lot of those lag putts. And I did properly with that. Again, I prevented the big numbers. I made one poor tee shot, and the remainder of it was very constant.”
The German golfer added: “I’ve been taking part in properly the last two, three occasions out on LIV. I did not have good end result, but I used to be taking part in properly. And I knew I discover more consistency. I actually get pleasure from taking part in this golf course.
“Monday, Tuesday, I had so much fun on the golf course. I think it really suits my eye. It’s a very fair test. Great for the PGA Championship.”
Kaymer will resume his bid at a 7:29 a.m. ET tee time, paired with Elvis Smylie and Davis Riley.
