The Mets are tapping into supervisor Andy Green’s past to fill out their coaching employees.
Johnny Washington, who had coached alongside Green both in San Diego and Chicago, can be employed as a co-hitting coach for the Mets, as The Post’s Joel Sherman first reported Thursday.
Last season, Washington served as the minor league hitting coordinator for the Braves. Previously, he had been the Angels’ hitting coach in 2024-25 and before that was an assistant hitting coach for the Cubs in 2022–2023, overlapping with then-bench coach Green.

As Padres supervisor in 2017, Green initially employed Washington as first base coach, promoted him the next season to assistant hitting coach, then promoted him to hitting coach in 2019.
Green was fired in September 2019, and Washington was let go after the season.
Washington, a minor league lifer who has had lots of coaching stops, including the KBO, will be part of a hitting employees that no longer consists of former director of hitting Jeff Albert, who won’t return to the major league job. The Mets beforehand announced that hitting coaches Troy Snitker and Rafael Fernández will stay with the employees; it’s unclear if the hitting staff is now finalized.

The Mets will spend 2027 honoring Jerry Koosman.
After the best left-handed pitcher in franchise historical past died Sunday at 83, the Mets announced they’d put on a patch memorializing Koosman on the sleeve of their home and street uniforms next season. The patch’s design has not yet been unveiled.
Koosman, whose No. 36 has hung in the Citi Field rafters since 2021 and who was elected into the staff’s Hall of Fame in 1989, is the winningest southpaw in Mets historical past.
The good complement to Tom Seaver, Koosman pitched a full sport in the clinching Game 5 of the World Series in 1969, finishing the outstanding championship run for the “remarkable result Mets.”
