A court in Madhya Pradesh has issued notices to filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and senior officers of Netflix in connection with the controversy surrounding the movie Ghooskhor Pandit. The order was handed by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Jabalpur after taking cognisance of a legal defamation criticism that alleges the movie’s title is derogatory in the direction of the Brahmin group.
The matter was heard by Magistrate Pankaj Savita, who examined an affidavit and supporting paperwork submitted by the complainant, Pt. Vaibhav Pathak. Based on the submissions and evidence positioned before the court, notices have been issued to the involved events.
Pathak, an lively member of the Madhya Pradesh Progressive Brahmin Mahasabha, argued that the title of the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer undermines the dignity of the Brahmin group. In his criticism, he acknowledged that the time period “Pandit” has traditionally symbolised data, scholarship and spiritual sanctity in Indian custom. Associating it with a phrase that interprets to “briber,” he contended, casts aspersions on the group at large and harms its social standing.
During the proceedings, advocate Aseem Trivedi, showing for the complainant, submitted that although the movie’s title is reportedly being modified in compliance with a Supreme Court directive, the impact of the earlier publicity can’t be reversed. He argued that the widespread promotion of the unique title had already precipitated reputational harm and that those accountable must be held accountable under the law.
The court has issued legal notices to Pandey in his capability as producer-director of the movie and to senior Netflix executives, including Reed Hastings, Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria and Monika Shergill.
