A cherished music legend died tragically broke at the younger age of 32 after being forced out of the enduring pop group she helped create.

Growing up in Detroit’s largely segregated Brewster Projects, Florence Ballard met two younger girls and fashioned The Supremes with them: Mary Wilson and Diane (not yet Diana) Ross.

Their fortunes finally shifted when Gordy positioned Ross as the frontwoman. Teamed with the acclaimed songwriting and manufacturing duo Holland-Dozier-Holland, The Supremes finally landed their breakthrough hit, Where Did Our Love Go?, which soared to No. 1, where it stayed for 11 weeks.

They subsequently launched other chart-topping songs, including Baby Love, Come See About Me, and You Keep Me Hangin’ On. However, the selection to make Ross the frontwoman rapidly created friction within the group.

Ballard spent her remaining years entangled in legal disputes with Motown and the assorted attorneys she retained. She died in Detroit in 1976 at just 32 years previous. The official trigger of death was coronary artery thrombosis, leaving her household in dire financial straits.

Both Wilson and Ross had been current at her funeral, which drew more than 5,000 followers according to AARP. When Ross arrived at New Bethel Baptist Church, she was met with boos from the gang. Inside, sitting alongside Ballard’s household, Ross reached for her former bandmate’s youngest daughter, Lisa, and held the kid in her lap.
