Netanyahu forced to apologize to Qatar for Israel | Political News
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly apologized to Qatar for a controversial Israeli strike in Doha earlier this month.
Netanyahu made the apology in a telephone call from the White House on Monday to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, GWN reported. The call got here as Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump in Washington.
The relationship between the pair has turn into more and more tense in latest months, with Trump expressing his frustration about Israel’s assault on Qatar, a key US ally. It’s unclear if the US president pressured the Israeli chief to apologize.
The Israeli strike focused Hamas leaders as they gathered in the Qatari capital to think about a US proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza last week.
Netanyahu’s apology marks a vital backflip from the Israeli chief, who earlier this month accused Qatar of being “tied to Hamas” and said the assault was “fully justified.”
“If Qatar wanted, it could easily apply much harder pressure, which would help us free all of our hostages in the first months of the war,” he told The Times of Israel.
“It [Qatar] is tied to Hamas. It strengthens Hamas. It hosts Hamas. It funds Hamas. It has much stronger levers, and it chose not to do that.”
Qatar described the assault as a “flagrant violation of all international laws and norms.” The US said Israel alerted it before the strike. Hamas said in a statement its top leaders survived the strike but that five lower-level members were killed.
Trump and Netanyahu are meeting amid increasing international pressure to end the nearly two-year old war in Gaza. Netanyahu has vowed to continue the offensive until Hamas is destroyed.
Trump’s proposal to stop the war in Gaza calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages within 48 hours and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian territory, The Associated Press reported, citing unnamed Arab officials.
Hamas is believed to be holding 48 hostages, 20 of whom are believed by Israel to be alive. It has demanded Israel agree to end the conflict and withdraw from Gaza as half of any ceasefire.
Israel’s sweeping offensive has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Several Arab states and UN consultants have accused Israel of committing genocide.
Israel’s blockade and ongoing offensive has pushed Gaza City into famine, according to the world’s top authority on starvation crises. More than 300,000 people have fled the town in latest weeks as Israel has ordered the population to transfer south, but an estimated 700,000 stay.
Last week, Israel’s Western allies including Britain, France, Canada and Australia acknowledged Palestinian statehood.
