Paul McCartney has expressed his deep respect for the late music icon Brian Wilson, even describing one of his songs as the “greatest.”
The co-founder of The Beach Boys sadly died at 82, with the information being introduced by his household via an Instagram post on Wednesday.
The household’s post learn, “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love and Mercy.”
Tributes have poured in from across the globe, honoring Brian’s “genius” and his groundbreaking contributions to music. His modern techniques led to hits like I Get Around, Good Vibrations and God Only Knows.
Among those paying homage was Beatles legend Paul McCartney, who shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. He wrote, “Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special. The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time.
“I liked him, and was privileged to be around his brilliant shining gentle for a little while. How we’ll proceed without Brian Wilson, ‘God Only Knows.”
McCartney, who himself has significantly influenced popular music, has always been a vocal supporter of The Beach Boys. The admiration was mutual, with Brian often praising The Beatles.
In 2000, Paul had the honor of inducting Brian into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
During the ceremony, Paul expressed, “In the ’60s, notably, he wrote some music that when I performed it, it made me cry and I do not fairly know why. It wasn’t essentially the phrases or the music, it is just one thing so deep in it, that there’s only sure items of music that can do this to me.

The Let It Be singer, back in the Nineties, acclaimed The Beach Boys’ God Only Knows as the “greatest song ever written.”
He reiterated this sentiment in 2003 when he echoed the identical remark in Charles Granata’s e book Wouldn’t it Be Nice: Brian Wilson and the Making of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds.
In a 2007 interview on Radio 1, Paul said, “God Only Knows is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian.”
Brian was born in Inglewood, southern California, in 1942. He went on to conquer the world with his distinctive songwriting abilities.
