Death in Paradise‘s Ben Miller performed DI Richard Poole for more than two collection before his character was killed off at the start of his third collection. He was tragically murdered by a former buddy from college, which resulted in Humphrey Goodman, performed by Kris Marshall, to be introduced in as the lead investigator. There have been a number of detectives come and go throughout its time on air, and Kris took over as the lead character from Ben for a time, before returning to London.

But as one of the most important and most beloved detectives on the collection, why did he determine to depart? It was back in 2014 that he made the choice, but he still returned years later for the show’s tenth anniversary celebrations. He was eager to reprise his position having felt that he had “unfinished business” with his character.

The factor that actually pushed him to quit the show though was the preservation of his relationship. He beforehand told Digital Spy: “I’ve just got divorced, and I’ve finally met somebody, and now I’m on the other side of the world, and we’re having a baby. That’s a proper curveball to be on the end of.

“So I knew what I had to do to get my spouse back – quit Death in Paradise!” However, despite his decision to leave the show, he admitted it is “never good to be murdered” as his character was killed off. He previously said: “It’s a spooky factor. People deal with you in a bizarre means when you are getting murdered in one thing.”

Throughout Ben’s time on the show, he also faced his own manner of struggles as guest star Steffan Rhodri explained on BBC Radio about how tough it was working in the heat.

He told BBC Radio Wales: “I do admire them in the heat. Ben Miller apparently, the first hero in it, the first detective cop in the first collection, he actually struggled the heat.

“The costume department told me after the first week they remade all his costumes so they had no backs to them, and they only shot him from the front… because he couldn’t stand being fully clothed in it.” It was explained that scenes performed outdoors had been “absolutely roasting” and that the “hot, red, and sweaty look is totally authentic”.

Ben’s tenure on the show was fairly spectacular, but the collection is now presently be in fronted by Don Gilet, who took over from Ralf Little at the end of the 2024 Christmas particular.
