Red Sox believe Sonny Gray could retire after this…
The 2026 season could end up being Sonny Gray’s last.
The veteran right-hander, who turns 37 in November, has not dedicated to pitching in 2027 and not too long ago told The Boston Globe he would retire “in a heartbeat” if his household wished him to do so.
Boston reportedly is taking the chance significantly, according to the outlet, with some in the group believing retirement is on the desk despite Gray’s strong season.
Asked not too long ago about the chance of retirement, Gray declined to say a lot.

“We can get into that at another time but not right now,” he said, per the Globe.
If 2026 is, certainly, his closing big league season, Gray’s closing start could come in the more and more seemingly matchup against the rival Yankees during the wild-card spherical of the postseason.
Gray spent a season and a half in pinstripes after coming over before the 2017 commerce deadline, and it didn’t go precisely as deliberate for either him or the group.
The three-time All-Star posted a 4.51 ERA across 41 video games (34 begins) with the Yankees before being traded to Cincinnati before the 2019 season, during which he posted a Cy Young-caliber season with the Reds.

Gray ripped the Yankees during his introductory press convention with the Red Sox over the winter.
“It feels good to me to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees,” Gray said.
“I never wanted to go there in the first place.”
Gray is having fun with one of the best seasons of his 14-year MLB profession in Beantown, posting a 2.82 ERA in 163 innings.
“I’ve very, very much so enjoyed Boston. Enjoyed the guys. Fenway has been, and is, a very special place,” Gray said.
