Reinier de Ridder's coach releases statement | MMA News
Middleweight contender Reinier de Ridder has an alternative in the UFC Vancouver main event against Brendan Allen to probably earn a title shot against champion Khamzat Chimaev, instead he could not reply the bell to start the ultimate spherical.
De Ridder stop on the stool and his nook threw in the towel. His coach, Harun Ozkan launched a statement on Sunday explaining why the choice was made the stop the struggle.
“Friends, fans, and supporters, I normally don’t share personal things on here, but I feel I owe a little explanation to everyone who’s been behind us. First of all, thank you for the amazing support we’ve been receiving. It’s been a crazy and busy year so far.
“Last evening didn’t go as we wished. After a very strong start in the first spherical, issues rapidly began fading and we couldn’t actually recuperate from the photographs in and after the second spherical. I made the call to stop the struggle after the fourth spherical. I take full duty for that determination and it was the precise call to make for me in the second. It’s not a determination I ever wished to make, but I assume sometimes you’ve to,” Ozkan wrote on Instagram.
“My job is to coach, but also to look out for my fighter’s health. I’ve been with Reinier for principally his entire profession and noticed too many indicators that made me step in. If I didn’t do something, he would’ve continued the struggle. Rather than risk pointless injury, I made a decision to call it a day and go home as healthy as potential. Live to struggle another day,” he continued.
“I completely don’t care about pleasing others if it comes at the fee of somebody’s health. There’s a skinny line between “being tough” and watching out for your health. This sport will be brutal. These guys sacrifice a lot of their life in and out of the cage – there’s no need for extra injury if it may be prevented. Most people overlook they’re human too.
“Zero excuses for this loss, we knew what we were going for. We are not happy with this performance, but for now recovery first, evaluate some stuff and we will be back next year. It has been an amazing year overall and thankful for all the highs and lows in life.Proud of you my brother @deriddermma. We’ve come a long way.”
