Report: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Under DOJ

Back in April, it was revealed that Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and a number of staffers took a 2023 journey to Dubai, which value practically $62,000. The mayor claimed that it was paid for by the D.C. Chamber of Commerce and then at another level that it was paid for by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Except an investigation executed by ABC affiliate WJLA 7 discovered that neither declare was true, as was reported at the time. In fact, it was the nation of Qatar that paid for the journey. Bowser then proceeded to blame what occurred on an alleged paperwork error supposedly made by a staffer:

The Mayor’s Office said the journey was coated by DC’s Chamber of Commerce which wasn’t true and then it said it was paid by the U.S. Conference of Mayors which was also not true.  

After my investigation uncovered the reality Bowser is now asking Qatar to give her workplace reciepts for the journey because she never filed them with the District.  

I also found her workplace is asking Qatar to signal a Donation Agreement two years after the journey. Something that according to the Mayor’s memorandeum was suppose to be executed before she ever left for the journey.

A month later, she was hit with an ethics grievance from the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), which requested that “the Board of Ethics and Government Accountability investigate Bowser for allegedly accepting illegal travel and hospitality gifts on high-profile trips” not just to Dubai but also “to Doha, Qatar, for the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, Las Vegas, Miami and Mar-a-Lago.”

In an update to this story, the New York Times reviews that Bowser is now under investigation by the DOJ:

Federal prosecutors have opened a corruption investigation into Mayor Muriel E. Bowser of Washington, analyzing a overseas journey she took with members of her employees that was paid for by Qatar, according to people acquainted with the inquiry.

The investigation, which is being dealt with by the U.S. attorney’s workplace in Washington, has been underway for months, but might face vital hurdles because of the recognized information of the case and latest turmoil inside the Justice Department.

This week, the F.B.I. agent who was main the investigation was fired by the Trump administration for having taken half in a legal inquiry into President Trump’s makes an attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

However, that report is being disputed by an unnamed Trump administration official who allegedly told Axios that Bowser just isn’t under investigation:

“The mayor’s name was mentioned in something, but she is not the target nor being investigated,” a senior administration official told Axios.

• The official blamed the rumor of the investigation on a disgruntled fired FBI agent.
• Bowser’s workplace said in a assertion it had not been notified of an investigation.
