Kristi Noem has come under fire from her fellow Republicans, including senators who voted to affirm her place as Homeland Security Secretary.
Following the deadly capturing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis over the weekend, many GOP members are now questioning Noem’s immigration enforcement ways. North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, who voted to affirm Noem, said, “She should be out of a job.”
Meanwhile, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who also voted to affirm her, said, “I might not assist her again, and I believe it in all probability is time for her to step down.” The senators are the first GOP lawmakers to brazenly call for Noem’s elimination.
“I think what she’s done in Minnesota should be disqualifying,” Tillis told reporters. “It’s just amateurish. It’s terrible. It’s making the president look bad.” President Donald Trump is going through intense stress to fire Noem following the capturing, while Democrats are calling for her impeachment.
Tillis also called out White House deputy chief of employees Stephen Miller for his accusations of Pretti in the quick aftermath of the capturing. “Those two people told the president before they even had any incident report whatsoever that the person who died was a terrorist,” said Tillis, “I mean that is amateur hour at its worst.”

Tillis said he could be open to operational modifications at the Department of Homeland Security, including requiring an impartial investigation. He also said he could be okay with the Democrats’ calls for to cut up off DHS funding from a six-bill bundle that’s up for debate in the Senate this week.
Democrats have put a stopgap measure in place while the division’s funding is renegotiated.
“I wouldn’t have a problem with its absence,” Tillis said about the DHS invoice.

Among the Democrats, only seven voted to affirm Noem for the secretary gig, but some are having purchaser’s regret. “Kristi Noem should resign or be removed,” said New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen. She clearly doesn’t know what she’s doing. She’s not up to the job. She’s lied to the American public, and it is time for her to go.”
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman called Noem “inept and completely incompetent.” Meanwhile, New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan said Noem would have been asked to resign by now had this been a normal administration. “This is clearly not a regular administration,” she said.
On the other hand, many Democrats don’t want to open the door for someone else to become the department’s secretary. “I do not need a DHS Secretary Stephen Miller,” said Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, who also voted for Noem. “Just her resignation wouldn’t be adequate.”

“If she goes, we’re going to get just another dangerous apple,” said Michigan Senator Gary Peters. So we have to fix DHS.” Peters’ fellow state senator, Elissa Slotkin, who also voted for Noem, dodged questions on whether or not she ought to resign.
“I will have more to say about it tomorrow,” she said. It comes as more than three-quarters of House Democrats assist impeaching Noem.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on Tuesday that if Trump did not fire her, he would push to have Noem impeached. But the president got here to her protection, saying she’s “doing a very good job.” He called Tillis and Murkowski “losers” and “terrible senators” in an interview with ABC News.
