Campbell Hatton has spoken brazenly about his mental health after saying his return to boxing for an exhibition struggle in reminiscence of his late father, Ricky. Hatton Jnr retired from the game last 12 months to turn into a photo voltaic panel installer, but will now struggle again on the undercard of an event in Dubai that his dad was due to headline.

The two-weight world champion announced his comeback last summer time with a struggle against Eisa Al Dah on 2 December, but died by suicide less than two months before that scheduled return to the ring. Kell Brook is now due to struggle Al Dah in honour of Hatton Snr on 11 April, with Hatton Jnr as properly as his father’s nephew, Jack, and niece, Lola, who are teenage novice boxers, preventing on the undercard against opponents from the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking about his mental health, Hatton Jnr has told Boxing Now, formally BBTV: “I’m doing alright, a lot better. It’s been a horrific 12 months for me, really, but I’m getting there now, getting things back on track.

“This has carried out wonders for me, getting ready for this and trying ahead to doing it in reminiscence of my dad as properly. I’m boxing now for my own well-being, actually, I’m not too bothered about the rest.

“I think over the last 12 months I’ve realised there’s a lot more to life than boxing. The pressure I found tough when I was boxing is nothing compared to what I’ve been going through over the last 12 months.

“I do know how a lot better I’m feeling when I’m trying after myself and when I’m working in direction of one thing and doing the fitting issues in contrast to what I’ve been doing, so it was no brainer actually to keep me on the straight and slender, it gives me that construction again. I’m feeling a lot better for it, so masses of causes why I’m doing this exhibition, one of the main ones being to honour my dad’s reminiscence, to raise awareness (for The Ricky Hatton Foundation), but the main factor is just to get my head back proper, actually.”

Hatton Jnr continued: “I need to do him proud, but again, it is just that construction for my life, and that’s what retains me mentally on it. I’m doing it for my daughter (Lyla), because there’s a superb probability, the way in which I used to be going, I would not have been right here.

“I can’t afford not to be right. I’ve got to think of her, I’ve got to think of my family who’ve been through enough already, so I need to do whatever it takes to be right, really.”

He continues to take it day by day, saying, “In the last 12 months, well, even less than that, I’ve been told to take each day at a time. I know at the minute this is giving me a lot more happiness and a lot more structure, and it’s working wonders for my mental health, so I’m gonna keep waking up and just doing the same same things really, so not really thinking too far ahead of where it can go, but I just know it’s working for me at a minute.

Hatton Jnr also recalled what prompted him to make those changes: “I used to be residing my life, not wanting to be right here and placing myself in hazard a lot of the time, and my household might see it, and it was placing them through hell. It was a little bit of myself understanding and my household stepping in, to be sincere.”
