US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has admitted that “someone made a big mistake,” after a report stated he and different officers inadvertently texted secret plans about army strikes in Yemen to a journalist.
On Monday, The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, stated officers mistakenly added him to a prime secret group chat on Signal, wherein they mentioned plans about US strikes in opposition to Houthi targets in Yemen, hours earlier than the assaults came about.
Rubio, who was amongst officers added to the chat, on Wednesday stated that “reforms” might be put in place to make sure the incident “never happens again.”
“Obviously someone made a mistake. Someone made a big mistake and added a journalist. Nothing against journalists, but you ain’t supposed to be on that thing,” he stated.
Goldberg said he received a connection request on Signal on March 11 from a user identified as “Mike Waltz.” Two days later, he said he was added to the group chat, which was called “Houthi PC small group.”
He said an account identified as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth detailed the proposal about military strikes, including information about weapons packages, targets and timing of the attack.
Trump administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, were among those added to the chat, according to Goldberg.
Hegseth on Wednesday slammed Goldberg, claiming that the chat contained “no classified information.”
“This only proves one thing: Jeff Goldberg has never seen a war plan or an “attack plan” (as he now calls it). Not even close. As I kind this, my crew and I are touring the INDOPACOM area, assembly w/ Commanders (the blokes who make REAL “war plans”) and speaking to troops,” he wrote on X.

The National Security Council said the text messages appeared to be “genuine” and it was reviewing how “an inadvertent quantity was added to the chain.”
Government watchdog group American Oversight on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against Trump administration officials involved in the group chat, including Hegseth, arguing they violated federal records laws by using Signal to discuss military actions. The group said it was seeking to “get better unlawfully deleted messages and forestall additional destruction.”
President Donald Trump on Tuesday advised Fox News the incident was a “mistake,” adding that there was “nothing important” in the messages.
Following the leak, Democrats called for an investigation into the blunder, with Representative Chris Deluzio of Pennsylvania saying “heads ought to roll.”
