So, a Seal Walks Into a Bar… – RedState

Even if you spent a lot of your Sunday considering about numerous sea mammals and their adventures in human habitations (and who hasn’t?) the concept of a New Zealand fur seal pup flip-flopping its manner into a Richmond (no, not that Richmond, the New Zealand Richmond) pub in all probability wasn’t on the record of potentialities.

And yet, that’s exactly what has occurred. A child fur seal galumphed, or so the story goes, into a bar and promptly wedged itself under the dishwasher. He was in all probability upset at being under the legal consuming age for seals.

The creature was apparently misplaced, curious and properly below New Zealand’s legal consuming age. It lodged itself under the dishwasher and confirmed no curiosity in calling a cab.

It was a moist, lazy Sunday night when the infant fur seal waddled into the Sprig + Fern The Meadows craft beer bar in Richmond, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Accustomed to seeing animals in the pet-friendly bar, co-owner Bella Evans assumed the customer was a canine before she took a nearer look.

“Everyone was in shock,” Evans said. “Oh my gosh. What do we do? What’s going on?”

A patron grabbed a sweater and tried to usher the seal out of the back door. Evading its pursuers, the creature dashed into a restroom and then hid under the dishwasher, which was swiftly unplugged.

Whatever his motive for invading the bar, he clearly did not intend to make it his porpoise in life. He did not seem to have a smartphone, so he wasn’t there to take a sealfie. Maybe he harbored affection for one of the human patrons? The patrons themselves did not appear troubled by the go to; the little man wasn’t krilling their vibe.

This would seem to be a very younger instance of Arctocephalus forsteri, the southern fur seal. They are inoffensive little critters, wanting a lot like a big-eyed canine with flippers in the place of legs. They are clever and curious, although this younger seal took curiosity to a new degree. 

In the end, all the pieces ended up OK for people and pinnipeds alike.

New Zealand’s conservation company confirmed it acquired “numerous” stories from the public about a seal noticed in Richmond on Sunday before the fugitive turned up at the pub. Bar workers “did a great job keeping the seal safe” until rangers arrived, said Department of Conservation spokesperson Helen Otley.

The seal was launched on close by Rabbit Island, thought of a protected location because of its dog-free standing, Otley said. It’s commonplace for curious younger seals to show up in surprising locations at this time of 12 months, she added, as they observe rivers and streams up to 15 km (9 miles) inland.

It’s uncertain that the younger seal will return to the Sprig + Fern The Meadows craft beer bar; it is sure to be a case of seal me once, disgrace on you, seal me twice, disgrace on me. This younger critter is now where he belongs, on an island where he is protected, signed, sealed, and delivered.
