Senior US politicians have launched a blistering assault on Donald Trump’s makes an attempt to strain Denmark into handing over Greenland, warning the transfer is reckless, pricey and damaging to America’s alliances. Speaking to the Meidas Touch Network, Congresswoman Sarah McBride condemned Trump’s refusal to rule out utilizing drive against Denmark, accusing him of taking assist from America’s allies for granted.

The criticism comes amid growing alarm worldwide over Trump’s intentions toward NATO allies following the fallout from his Greenland marketing campaign. Trump is due to deal with the World Economic Forum in Davos today, in what many see as a key second for clarifying his next steps.

So far, NATO nations including the UK, Germany, Denmark, Norway and France have despatched troops to Greenland to reassure the US president that the island is secure, after he claimed it was weak to Russian and Chinese aggression under Danish control.

However, these strikes seem to have additional angered Trump, who responded by slapping tariffs of up to 25 per cent on the eight nations backing Denmark’s refusal to promote the territory. On Saturday, Trump said the UK would face a 10 per cent tariff “on any and all goods” despatched to the US from February 1, rising to 25 per cent from June 1, unless Washington is allowed to buy Greenland from Denmark.

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said alongside his French counterpart: “Germany and France agree: We will not allow ourselves to be blackmailed.” French Finance Minister Roland Lescure added: “Blackmail between allies of 250 years, blackmail between friends, is obviously unacceptable.”

In London, Sir Keir Starmer warned that commerce wars are “in no one’s interest” and appeared to rule out retaliatory tariffs, despite stories the EU is getting ready a €93bn (£80bn) package deal of countermeasures.

At a Downing Street press convention on Monday, the Prime Minister criticised Trump’s tariff threats as “completely wrong” but urged calm somewhat than escalation.
