Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) urged Washington to redirect its focus and take a stronger stance against Russia after hinting at alleged violations of Western sanctions.
Whitehouse, who co-founded the bipartisan Ukraine Victory Caucus, slammed the Trump administration for failing to handle Russia‘s alleged use of shadow fleet tankers to transport oil despite sanctions, suggesting that Washington is performing counterproductively on the global stage, which he believes might have damning worldwide penalties.
The remarks come amid ongoing Ukraine peace talks after Berlin welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet with European and U.S. delegations to finalize a peace deal after almost 4 years of warfare. The proposal, which is still negotiating territorial and security guarantee phrases, is anticipated to be introduced by U.S. officers to Russia next week.
