Trump accuses incompetent Newsom of destroying | Political News
Donald Trump has defended his determination to deploy the National Guard to confront immigration protesters in Los Angeles, claiming California‘s Governor Gavin Newsom was “incompetent” and “destroying” the state.
The president’s determination on Sunday marked the first time in 60 years that a president had activated the National Guard to a state without a request from its governor.
California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday stated he deliberate to file a lawsuit against Trump’s determination, calling it an “outrageous overreach” that was stoking “terror” among residents.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump stated he had “no choice” but to ship the troops in, claiming Newsom was “incompetent.”
“Look at the job he is doing in California. He’s destroying one of our great states,” he stated.
“We would bring more [Guard troops] in if we needed it. You have to make sure that there’s law and order,” he added.
Around 300 National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday following three days of protests, sparking anger and worry among residents.
The troops had been deployed after clashes broke out between protesters and federal immigration authorities on Saturday. Agents unleashed tear fuel, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls, and protesters hurled rocks at Border Patrol automobiles.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated on Monday that the state was planning to file a lawsuit against Trump’s determination. Bonta stated California would search a court order declaring the president’s federalizing of the guard was illegal and a restraining order to stop the deployment.
Newsom accused Trump of taking “an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism that threatens the foundation of our republic.”
“This is a manufactured crisis. He is creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the U.S. constitution,” Newsom wrote on X.
“The illegal order he signed could allow him to send the military into ANY STATE HE WISHES.”
Earlier on Monday, Trump claimed that Los Angeles would have been “completely obliterated” if he had not deployed the Guard.
He also backed threats by his “border czar” Tom Homan to arrest officers who impede the immigration enforcement effort, including Newsom.
“I would do it if I were Tom. I think it’s great,” Trump stated. “Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing. He’s done a terrible job.”
