Trump admin slams Mamdani pageantry as New York | Political News

New York City officers and activists returned the Pride flag that was discreetly eliminated from the Stonewall National Monument on Thursday afternoon, in direct defiance of the Trump administration’s current federal steerage.
The Department of the Interior issued steerage last month, which drastically limits the categories of flags that could be flown at National Park Service websites. Federal officers eliminated the Pride flag from the national web site on Monday, marking the Trump administration’s latest blow against the LGBTQ+ neighborhood, after erasing any mentions of transgender and queer people from the Stonewall monument web web page last February.
Local activists and politicians immediately criticized the transfer and gathered in Christopher Park at the monument on Tuesday night time, calling for the Trump administration to return the flag to the birthplace of the trendy LGBTQ+ motion.
A National Park Service spokesperson emailed a assertion to the Express US on Tuesday, citing the new DOI steerage, which requires that “only the U.S. flag and other congressionally or departmentally authorized flags are flown on NPS-managed flagpoles, with limited exceptions.”

On Wednesday, federal officers reportedly hoisted a U.S. flag on the pole where the Pride flag once flew.
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal led the charge to “re-raise” the rainbow flag at the location on Thursday, saying, “Our community is not going to stand by idly as the Trump administration tries to erase our history.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was “outraged” by the removing of the rainbow flag, saying he would struggle to “defend” and “protect” the LGBTQ+ neighborhood. While the mayor wasn’t current at the return of the Pride flag on Thursday, the Trump administration called him out in a response.
The Trump administration claps back at the Pride flag’s return to Stonewall
On Thursday, tons of gathered at the Stonewall National Monument as New York officers, including Hoylman-Sigal and Representative Jerrold Nadler, raised a Pride flag alongside the American flag.
A DOI spokesperson emailed a assertion to the Express US on Thursday, after the Pride flag was raised again, slamming Mamdani for “political pagentry.”
“Hundreds of families in New York City went without power during this year’s severe cold weather, people are being found dead on the streets, and trash has piled up so high it towers over city residents,” the spokesperson said. “This is Mayor Mamdani and city officials’ New York City. While today’s political stunt is a distraction from their recent deadly failures, it would be a better use of their time to get the trash buildup off city streets, ensure there are no more avoidable deaths, and work to keep the power on for the people of New York City.”
Continuing, the DOI spokesperson said, “Today’s political pageantry shows how utterly incompetent and misaligned the New York City officials are with the problems their city is facing.”
The DOI referenced the flag code guidance impacting National Park Service-managed sites as the recent change.
“Recent adjustments to flag displays at the monument were made to ensure consistency with federal guidance,” the spokesperson asserted. “Stonewall National Monument remains committed to preserving and interpreting the history and significance of this site through its exhibits, programs, and educational initiatives.”
Former President Barack Obama designated the Greenwich Village neighborhood web site as a national monument in 2016 to honor the historical past of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, which occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a homosexual bar positioned reverse the monument. It is the first national monument devoted to LGBTQ+ historical past.
