The new order requires them to depart by March 17, 2026. The change will impression the lives of hundreds of Somalis presently residing in the U.S. and a number of hundred presently residing in the state of Minnesota under the safety.
“Temporary means temporary,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News Digital in a assertion. “Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status.”
“Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests,” Noem added. “We are putting Americans first.”
Somalia was granted temporary safety status in 1991 due to an ongoing civil conflict in the African nation. Former President Joe Biden prolonged the safety in September 2024.
