Donald Trump could take into account buying the Chagos Islands if Sir Keir Starmer’s settlement falls through, current studies counsel.

Officials have maintained the pact is critical to secure the future of the Diego Garcia base following a 2019 International Court of Justice advisory ruling that supported Mauritian sovereignty claims over the islands, studies the Express.
However, the proposal has drawn sharp criticism from opposition events and Mr Trump. The US President has called the settlement “a big mistake” and “a very woke thing”.
In January, he posted on his Truth Social platform: “surprisingly, our ‘brilliant’ NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.
“There is no doubt that China and Russia have seen this act of whole weak spot.”
More recently, Mr Trump said he was “very upset” in the Prime Minister for initially declining to permit the use of the UK-US Diego Garcia base for operations targeting Iran.
Last week, Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer commented: “I can not see an option where the President buys the island.
“We’re committed to the deal that we have struck. It is one that we’ve done in close confrontation with our allies.”
