Trump lashes out at NATO as he says allies only | Political News

President Donald Trump penned a scathing Truth Social post blasting NATO and other U.S. allies on Thursday morning, this time accusing them of failing to reply to calls for support unless they’re positioned under “pressure.”

“None of these people, including our own, very disappointing, NATO, understood something unless they’ve strain positioned upon them!!!” Trump wrote.

Over the past a number of days, he’s launched a marketing campaign bashing NATO for failing to be part of the U.S. in the conflict on Iran, stating that he’s “disappointed” in the trans-Atlantic treaty group for failing to support maybe its most highly effective member nation.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte caved to Trump on Wednesday, slamming his own European allies for not aiding the U.S. in its conflict against Iran.

“The form of power projection for the United States was in full play over the last six weeks,” Rutte told GWN’s Jake Tapper on The Lead. “And yes, it is true, not all European nations lived up to those commitments, and I totally understand that he is disappointed about it.”

“Iran is a big risk for Europe. It is existential for Israel. It is existential for the Middle East. So the whole world is safer by this president degrading those capabilities,” Rutte said in another portion of the interview. “This is by many in Europe acknowledged, and they understand that continuing talking to get this done would have brought us potentially past the moment where we can still do it.”

Since launching his conflict on Iran, Trump derided U.S. allies as “cowards,” slamming NATO as “a paper tiger” and evaluating U.Okay. Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Neville Chamberlain, who is best remembered for a coverage of appeasement toward Nazi Germany.

Trump has also issued repeated threats to seize control of Greenland, which has deeply strained U.S. relations with its NATO allies and raised fears that doing so by power may spell the end of the group.

The president’s main criticism now is that NATO allies have refused or ignored his calls for help after Iran successfully shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a very important commerce waterway that accounts for around 20% of all seaborne oil commerce in the world.

Rutte now finds himself in a precarious place. He’s toeing the road between appeasing Trump but also standing up for the group of which he’s primarily the chairman.

DON’T MISS…

He’s hinted in latest weeks that the U.S. may depart NATO altogether, with Trump himself also threatening to stroll out back in 2018 during his first time period.

After assembly with Rutte at the White House on Wednesday, Trump took to his Truth Social account to specific his annoyance with NATO, writing, “NATO WASN’T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON’T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN.”

Rutte has earned himself a repute as a “Trump whisperer” after notably serving to to draw up a plan that has seen European allies and Canada shopping for U.S. weapons for Ukraine and which has stored the Trump administration concerned in Europe’s greatest conflict in a long time.

Among Rutte’s most daunting duties since he took workplace in 2024 has been making an attempt to keep Trump engaged in NATO, notably as the U.S. has set its sights on security challenges elsewhere — including in the Indo-Pacific, Venezuela and, most lately, Iran.

Rutte has used flattery before to get hold of his objectives, praising Trump for forcing allies to spend more on their protection, also congratulating the U.S. chief over his conflict on Iran, while refraining from criticizing Trump’s bombshell Truth Social post earlier in the week that warned that “a whole civilization will die” if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Of his dialogue with Trump at the White House on Wednesday, Rutte told GWN, “This was a very frank, very open discussion, but also a discussion between two good friends.”

He declined to verify studies that Trump is contemplating transferring U.S. troops out of European nations that do not help the conflict, however.
