Trump orders National Guard out of Chicago, LA and | Political News
On New Year’s Eve, Donald Trump announced that his administration could be eradicating National Guard troops from a number of Democrat-led cities he is been focusing on over a number of months.
“We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities, and ONLY by that fact,” the president wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday. Trump added that the aforementioned cities had been “GONE if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in.”
Trump hinted at the chance of troops returning to the cities in the future, “maybe in a different and stronger kind, when crime begins to soar again!”
“It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made???” the post read.
In a separate post, Trump thanked the president of the National Border Patrol Council, Paul Perez, for doing a incredible job. “So proud that more than half are of Hispanic heritage, which Los Angeles’ incompetent Mayor, Karen Bass (who hasn’t even gotten the permits for people rebuilding their homes after the record-setting fire that took place), and other Third Rate Politicians, are complaining about,” he wrote.
The president then boasted about the Border Patrol’s enlistment numbers, saying they had been at document highs. “There is no group I am more proud of than Border Patrol and ICE, and nobody understands the Border better than our fantastic Hispanic population, which continues to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
The announcement comes after the Trump administration has been engaged in a months-long legal battle with California Governor Gavin Newsom over control of the National Guard. However, court filings with the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals show that the Department of Justice has backed off its efforts to maintain control of the troops.
“Defendants don’t oppose lifting of the partial administrative keep and hereby respectfully withdraw their movement for a keep pending appeal,” federal attorneys wrote in the brief.

The decision came weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration from deploying troops in Chicago. California‘s legal battle with the Trump administration began in June when the president sent thousands of National Guard members and hundreds of U.S. Marines into Los Angeles in response to protests over federal immigration raids.
Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer issued a brutal ruling, ordering Trump to restore control of about 100 troops in Los Angeles to Newsom. In earlier hearings and filings, the Department of Justice argued that troops must remain under the president’s control indefinitely after being federalized and that such orders are not subject to review by the courts.
In his Dec. 10 order, Breyer called these arguments “surprising,” saying that interpretation would “allow a president to create a perpetual police pressure comprised of state troops, so long as they had been first federalized lawfully.” Newsom’s office said it looked forward to an official ruling from the 9th Circuit to restore the troops to state service.
“This admission by Trump and his occult cupboard members means this unlawful intimidation tactic will finally come to an end,” his workplace wrote on X.
