Tyson Fury admits having last-minute concerns | Boxing News
Tyson Fury appears to be wrestling with some pre-fight jitters just days before his comeback to the ring, having watched Deontay Wilder’s bout with Derek Chisora.
The ‘Gypsy King’ is set to end yet another retirement from boxing on Saturday evening when he faces Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Fury declared his retirement from the game last 12 months after consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk.
However, it did not take long for the 37-year-old to make a dramatic U-turn, and he’s now making ready for a busy 2026 in the ring. Nonetheless, it seems that the previous two-time heavyweight world champion has some minor worries forward of this weekend’s conflict with the Russian, following Wilder’s peculiar contest with Chisora.
The two boxing veterans exchanged blows in a madcap battle at the O2 Arena this past weekend, with Wilder finally securing a break up choice victory.
Both males traded punches for over 12 rounds in what was far from a technical showdown. Fury conceded the match was tough to watch and hopes to carry out barely better when he returns.
“By the time the fight comes around on Saturday, I’d have been out of the ring 16 months,” Fury told InsideRingPresent. “And at 37 years old, 16 months is a long time, so I have a little bit of stuff to do and to think about in my own mind and see how I am.
“After watching Deontay and Chisora battle, it was laborious to watch for me. It was unhappy, it was heartbreaking, and I’ve never seen two males slide as a lot as they did in my life. And I’m considering, am I f****** next? Is this me? So I said to the boys, I said, ‘If I’m even 10 per cent as unhealthy as those guys in my battle, take me out to the sector and shoot me.'”
The build-up has been overshadowed by turmoil in the Fury camp following Tyson’s father, John, revealing that he is no longer on speaking terms with his son. Fury Sr criticised his son for returning to the ring following a 16-month absence, and believes he has not been the same since the trilogy bouts with Wilder.
However, Fury told The Ring: “For my father, he just desires the best for me. He desires me to retire and stroll away, but if it was that straightforward I might have walked away 5 occasions before. But I haven’t got that means to let go. It can have an effect on a lot of issues, including households. My dad saying he isn’t talking to me – I suppose he is attempting to encourage me not to battle any more. But preventing’s all I’ve ever identified and all I ever will know.
“It’s an obsession and sometimes you get selfish because, in the beginning, you want things in your life – you want to be a champion, you want to earn money, get a house and cars and whatever. Then it becomes an obsession later on. You want more, more, more. It starts to affect your family, your home life, your wife, your children – everybody. There’s got to be an end to it but, to me, there is no end. Mike Tyson just fought recently at 60 years old.”
