West Virginia Now Going After Virginia Jobs –

Virginia could also be, as their license plates proclaim, for lovers, but under the high heel of Governor Abigail Spanberger, it sure will not be for business. Gov. Spanberger has unleashed a cascade of anti-business, anti-growth insurance policies, from tax hikes to rules, and Virginia’s business group is not loving that.

Fortunately for Virginia business homeowners wanting for an out, there may be greener grass proper next door, in West Virginia, where Governor Patrick Morrisey is launching a marketing campaign to lure Virginia companies to the Mountain State.

Virginia’s shift toward greater taxes and new rules is triggering an interstate financial “brawl,” as West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey strikes to lure companies and employees across the border.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger has promoted an “affordability agenda,” but a wave of proposed tax will increase and regulatory modifications from legislative Democrats has opened an alternative for neighboring states to compete for companies and residents.

Even though some of these proposals never made it to Spanberger’s desk or claimed her signature, the political climate has prompted West Virginia officers to actively goal Virginia’s workforce and employers, pitching decrease taxes and fewer rules as a aggressive different.

This is how the Great Sorting works; it isn’t just people that are transferring, it is complete companies. And Governor Morrisey clearly sees an alternative right here.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Morrisey said he plans to take that pitch straight into Virginia communities, including Loudoun County, to draw companies and employees into West Virginia.

“We’re going to be spending some time in Loudoun County and all across Virginia on making the pitch and the comparison of the direction that West Virginia is moving in [and] the direction Virginia is going in,” Morrisey told Fox News Digital on the sidelines of the announcement of a new 275-acre business tax district he said will convey $200 million in financial investment to the three-county Eastern Panhandle area.

Now that’s some chutzpah; the West Virginia governor going in proper under Governor Spanberger’s nostril, as it had been, to lure companies away. And he could just succeed.

Now it stays to be seen how profitable Governor Morrisey shall be in this specific marketing campaign, but just take a look at how the Great Sorting is occurring nation-wide, with even major enterprises like Chevron transferring its company headquarters from San Ramon, California to Houston, Texas, or Oracle from California to Texas; Hewlett Packard fled California for Houston, Texas, Caterpillar left Illinois for Irving, Texas; and, of course, all of Elon Musk’s varied enterprises have left California for Texas. 

Most of these companies moved to more business-friendly climates, with decrease taxes, decrease regulatory burdens, and less costly real estate. And, of course, Texas’s Governor Abbott has welcomed them with open arms, a feat which now West Virginia’s Governor Morrisey seeks to reproduce. And bear in thoughts, the journey from Loudon County to West Virginia is a lot shorter than transferring from San Francisco to Dallas.
