Young Man Becomes HS Grad, Finishes Boot

One of the issues I like about Alabama is its honor and appreciation for navy service and its veterans. While Texas and Georgia beat the state in quantity of veterans and quantity of navy bases, the weight of reverence and respect given to those who are presently serving and have served, is one thing actually particular. Which is why Luke Owen of Chilton County captured our hearts with his diligent pursuit of the dream of changing into a Marine.

The American Dream and those who defend it’s the subject of this week’s Feel-Good Friday.

When Luke Owen walked across the stage at Chilton County High School commencement, he anticipated to hear cheers from his household.

Instead, the whole stadium rose to its ft.

The standing ovation got here just days after the 17-year-old formally earned the title of United States Marine following 13 weeks of recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina.

For Owen, the second marked the end result of a dream he says started at age 7.

“I saw my first Marines, and something just sparked at that moment,” Owen said. “Someone just clicked on my brain, told me I’m gonna be a Marine one day, but I had to work for it.”

What a testomony to this younger man, that he did not curl up into a ball and rail about how unfair life is. Instead, Owen immediately buckled down and did the work to change himself in order to see his dream fulfilled. It was Thomas Edison who said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Owen was intently targeted on not lacking his.

During his sophomore 12 months, Owens made an appointment to see a Marine recruiter to assess what he needed to do to make the grade. The recruiter told him his weight was above the usual for enlistment. So, Owen went back home and made adjustments to his eating, included a daily exercise routine, and labored to get the weight off.

“That was my motivation,” Owen said. “So I changed my lock screen to the Marine Corps EGA, started eating well, dieting, working out practically every day. It was a click to where I had to lock in.”

Feel-Good Friday: Wreaths Across America Continues Its Mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach

Within one 12 months, Owen misplaced 90 kilos, assembly the Marine enlistment weight requirement. His dad and mom have been more than proud. Owen was still 17 at the time, so they accompanied him to the navy recruitment workplace to approve his enlistment. However, the work had only just begun. Owen still wished to full high faculty. So, in his junior 12 months, Owen accelerated his coursework in order to meet commencement necessities by the end of the first semester of his senior 12 months. 

In February 2026, Owen left for recruit training (AKA “boot camp”), and on May 15, Owen turned a United States Marine. His high faculty commencement was a week later, so Owen got here home to stroll in his commencement. But instead of a cap and robe, Owen was in his Marine uniform.

“I remember standing up, my name was about to get called, and I just thought I was gonna hear my family yelling from the crowds,” Owen said. “Then they called my name and I just hear like a roar, thunder, just everyone’s clapping, cheering.”

His mom said the response inside the commencement ceremony represented one thing bigger than just help for her son.

“You felt the American pride in there,” Christa Owen said. “These are people that don’t know Luke. He wasn’t even there his last semester. These families don’t know him and they just stood because of the uniform that he wore and what it represented. It was an amazing moment.”

Owen’s father, John Owen, said watching his son pursue his dream has been one of the most rewarding experiences as a mum or dad.

“I’m not sure there’s anything more rewarding as a parent than to see your child finally decide what their dream is and then to pursue it and actually throw themselves into it and get there,” he said.

What a lovely testomony to the American Dream and the resilience, willpower, and sacrifice embodied in our preventing males and ladies. Owen is on his means to Camp Geiger in North Carolina to totally dive into his service. We are grateful for this service, and stay impressed by his pursuit of his dream.
